Posts: 1910 (06/24/09 08:47 AM) Icon of Geezerhood Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Linda and I got back last night a day earlier than planned.We did 270 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway.The speed limit on the Parkway is 35 in most places with 45 in some.I found out that my cruise control will work at 25 so that is what we did for the most part.It is really beautiful.We saw turkey,deer,groundhogs and lotsa squirrels but no bear. After two days you are kinda saturated with scenery so we spent Monday night in Roanoke,Virginia and hit I-81 Southbound yesterday morning.Stopped in Abingdon,Virginia and had lunch with some old friends and stopped at Linda's sister's house to deliver her birthday present and went out to supper with them.Got back here just before dark last night.It felt great to sleep in my own bed last night. I don't care where you go,how much fun you have or how long you are gone..it's always good to get back home. Stan The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa. It would have been enjoyable but I left late from Tennessee and needed to be in a small town in Virginia. That road was 25 mph tops most of the time, turn left, hit the brakes, turn right, turn left....switchbacks for about 60 miles. At one point there was a speed limit sign that said 55 mph. I thought I had it made but the straightaway was only about 200 yds. Very cruel joke. What would have been about a 2 hour drive if those evil goadladies had sent me via interstate turned into a 6 hour nightmare. Virginia has the most congested interstate highways I've ever driven. Bumper to bumper traffic all the way through the state. In OK once you leave the major cities it's pretty much open road. I wasn't too impressed with WV toll roads either. They consider a pickup (no bigger than a lexus) to be a truck and charge the same as if it were a semi. Still that was a good trip and I'll do it again sometime. I just won't be in a hurry next time. Nothing but nut cases on that stretch I swear! I use the old 19 or is it 119 road instead. It is sort of like the Goat Lady road but then I like zipping around on that sort of road! The humidity is supposed to come up here again and I blame WVChuck for that. It is amazing the difference between my place and his usually. He hits 80% humidity regularly but I am in the 50% range for the most part. First time I went down there I thought I was back in the Delaware Vally area where they deal with that humidity all the time, course they are milder in the winter though. Traffic and nitwits are rampid in PA and I have never seen worse drivers anywhere in the country in all my many miles of driving anywhere! Just absolute nut cases up there and I laugh like heck when I see the signs about aggressive drivers being arrested because if they did that the roads would be empty! Guess who I got a call from today? Would you believe Rock Island Auction called me and asked if I had any bids on their upcoming auction or had plans to attend it. Man did they get an ear-full! I mentioned the fact that local auctions had no buyers premiums and that they eliminated the cost of travel and time and were cheaper. I mentioned the backwards gun laws of Illinois and how I detested having to give business in a state that had such ideas. Told them they should have kept Obama as they deserved him and we didn't really want him here in WV or other places I frequent. Time I got done I think I got his attention. He said well they would ship things and I mentioned that their photos and descriptions were so far off what they actually were selling I was not about to trust them in anyway. That was the final straw for him and I think he was ready for another nut to crack! This is the second time in recent months I have gotten a call from them I wonder if the current economy is catching up with them and others like them? Last time they were lucky and they got the answering machine. Guns rolling an and out of the shop the other day and some interesting things down there but nothing money wise I am interested in for the money right now. Anybody collect top break 32 pistols? I saw about for in the shop in Gassaway yesterday. One interested me particularly and it was a blued 32 S and W in fair condition. It was hammer-less and I believe they were called the detective special or something like that. I remember someone telling me the mobsters of yesteryear liked them because of no hammer to foul up them in a pocket. Others were nickel plated and fair condition with one being a US revolver and the other two being made by the bike company which escapes me at this moment. He wanted $150 for the S and W and I wasn't paying that much for one as I don't collect them and have no idea of value. Well if I am going to get anything done I better get rolling I guess! One I want but haven't seen for sale in a long time is a webley in either .38 or .45. A friend of mine has a .38 but won't part with it. Good shooter. With my rapidly dwindling gun funds I can't afford a nice one but I am after all a shooter first and foremost. Some people accuse me of being a gun collector but I consider myself a gun accumulator. Came home this evening, and dangit, Linda had used up all the cold water(sorry old joke). Will be in your neck of the woods somewhat, Terry next Wednesday and Thursday. Marval campgrounds to be exact, Gore OK. A little better than our trips we usually make out to Buffalo OK, about 3 hours closer. My wife's parents bought a fifth wheel travel trailer, and have settled in at the campgrounds for at least the summer. They are on a kind of work, stay for free plan. If they work combined for 30 hours they get to hookup for free with all the amenities. Anything over that 30 hours they get paid. Not a bad gig actually. Also I know what you mean about the congested OK turnpikes. That Cimmeron Turnpike between Tulsa and Stillwater is horrible. I can actually remember not seeing another vehicle for the entire stretch once. Linda finally got her Onstar working on the new Malibu. It has turn by turn directions. Sure glad we got that figured out. Now she can safely navigate the 3 block commute she has everyday. She is the church secretary btw, so buy our used cars with confidence

Posts: 1911 (06/24/09 08:39 PM) Icon of Geezerhood Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I went over the Fred the gunsmith's shop to pick up a few parts he made made for me and he said my Siamese 45/70 was ready.He put an adjustable Bold trigger with side safety on it,opened up the feed rails a little to help feeding and did some adjusting on the bolt shroud.It is sweeeeeeeelt on the trigger pull.I got home and did a wee bit of smoothing a couple of spots on the stock and she is ready to go.I put an old Weaver K6 on it for right now.I shot it a couple of times when I first got it and it was good but I'll bet it's even better now.It looks like a good hunting rifle. Nice day here, probably about 80F, but nice breeze now cooling everything off. Busy doing last minute work stuff and packing for the trip. I leave tomorrow and will be gone about two weeks, or so. I got some appointments set up for Friday, but it sounds like one doesn't get very far very fast over there. Most of the place I have to go is about two hours drive. Not going to be a fun trip, or it will be at least tireing. I picked up my flight tickets today and have the suitcase and some paper work to get packed and that is it. I'll try to get on line when I get the chance. It will give my new air card a workout. Bob, early happy birthday as I will be gone on that day. You now qualify for early social security. You might take it while there is still some money in the program. Kevin in Or.
