Good afternoon, all. It was a scorcher weekend here. Highs in the upper 90s and humidity to match giving us heat indexes of 105-110. I woke up Saturday still
beat from Friday but we still had an order for clams, so I took a couple of Ibuprofen, and headed out anyway. The water left where I was working, so a couple
of times I had to walk out to it and get wet to cool off. I decided it was time to crank up the air conditioner when I got in, so at least I can get out of the
heat around here now.
I went out after church Sunday to plant clams, and change a couple of screens. When I got in, I loaded up limestone and took a load of that out to spread on one of my 'natural' beds. I have a couple of small creeks that I am getting the wild clams to grow in, and spreading the limestone helps with the recruitment. My daughter came over with an ice cream cake she made for me for Father's Day. A bed of crushed Oreo cookies on the bottom, a layer of vanilla ice cream on that, and a chocolate fudge topping. A nice low calorie dessert.
I have been coasting today. I had to do some repairs on the chicken coop, and some gardening too. I rooted some more tomatoes and got started planting them. I got gassed up for the week. At least that didn't go up any more over the weekend. It shouldn't with the price of crude coming back down a little. I got another bundle of clam bags, so I am ready to harvest again tomorrow. The county is repaving the drive way to the landing, so that is closed down for a few days. I put the boat over and tied it to the big boat last night, so I can still work. It is just a pain because I have to carry everything to the dock and down it and across two boats to get it all loaded. When I bring clams in, I usually just leave them in the boat. That way, I can back the boat into the fish house, and unload them right into the cooler. For the next few days I will have to put them up on the dock between shrimp boats, and then carry them across the dock and into the fish house to get them in the cooler. I will be getting in late, so no help since the dock crew will have gone home. Hopefully it won't take them long. I rode by earlier, and the had a backhoe in there tearing up the old pavement. As badly as they are complaining about lack of funds for the budget, They could have filled in a couple of potholes, and it would have been fine. I am tired of the government bitching about no money in the budget, and then going out and wasting it like there was no end to it. They are replacing the guard rails next to the little bridge around the corner from my house. It is just a short two lane concrete bridge, and the old guard rails were still in good shape. It is (was) a scenic little creek, but it sure is ugly with the new rails. They are about three times the length of the old ones, with shock absorbing ends on them, and where the old ones were flush with the sides of the bridge, these are bolted to the inside of the bridge, making it narrower than it was. An unnecessary waste of time and money as far as I am concerned.
